iOS 15 Phone Dialer Layout Changes

Apple's iOS 15 brought subtle yet meaningful refinements to the iPhone’s Phone app, focusing on interface consistency, modernized iconography, and smoother call-management interactions. While the familiar keypad layout remained intact, the active in-call dialer and audio management controls received updates designed to streamline navigation, improve device handoff, and align with Apple's updated design language across the operating system.

Keypad Grid and Visual Styling

The numeric keypad retained its standard three-by-four grid layout (numbers 1 through 9, followed by *, 0, and #). However, iOS 15 introduced visual adjustments:

  • Contrast and Typography: Button labels received slightly bolder typography to enhance legibility, paired with refined background contrast for both Light and Dark modes.
  • Haptic and Touch Response: Touch targets remained identically sized, but tactile feedback was tuned for quicker number entry.
  • Call Button: The green circular call button remained anchored at the bottom center, maintaining its standard size and icon styling.

In-Call Button Grid Reorganization

During an active call, the interface displays a six-button grid above the red End Call button. In iOS 15, Apple refined how these controls function and appear:

  • Audio Source Selector: The traditional "Speaker" button was unified as an "Audio" control. Tapping it directly opens an audio routing sheet if multiple output devices (such as AirPods, Hearing Devices, or Bluetooth speakers) are connected, rather than cycling through outputs sequentially.
  • FaceTime Integration: The FaceTime shortcut remained in the lower row of the grid, updated to reflect iOS 15's broader FaceTime overhaul, allowing one-tap switching to video or FaceTime Audio.
  • Mute and Keypad Placement: Mute remained in the top-left slot, while the in-call Keypad button occupied the top-center slot, providing immediate access to DTMF tones for automated phone menus.
  • Add Call and Contacts: "Add Call" and "Contacts" filled the remaining grid spaces, preserving quick access to multi-party calls and directory lookups.

End Call Button Placement

In iOS 15, the red circular "End Call" button remained centered at the bottom of the screen, clearly separated from the primary six-button control grid to prevent accidental disconnections.

Compact Call Banner and Multitasking

Building on the compact call UI introduced in iOS 14, iOS 15 improved the transition between the compact incoming call banner and the full dialer screen. Swiping down on an active banner instantly expands the dialer controls to full screen, while swiping up collapses the call into an active pill indicator in the top status bar, allowing users to return to the full dialer interface with a single tap.
