iOS 15 Per-App Accessibility Settings Explained

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced Per-App Settings, an accessibility feature allowing users to customize display and motion settings for individual applications rather than applying changes globally across the entire system. This update gives users granular control over their user experience, ensuring that text adjustments, contrast enhancements, and animation reductions only apply where they are needed most, including on the Home Screen.

How to Access Per-App Settings

To access these options, open Settings, navigate to Accessibility, scroll to the bottom, and select Per-App Settings. From there, you can choose Add App to select any installed application or configure the Home Screen independently.

New Per-App Customization Choices

Once an app is added, iOS 15 provides the following dedicated customization options:

  • Bold Text: Enables or disables heavier font weights within the specific application to enhance readability without altering text across the entire operating system.
  • Larger Text: Provides an independent Dynamic Type slider, letting you increase or decrease text size specifically for that app.
  • Button Shapes: Adds underlines or outlined shapes to interactive buttons, making tappable areas easier to identify.
  • On/Off Labels: Adds binary indicators (a line "1" for on, a circle "0" for off) to toggle switches within the app interface.
  • Reduce Transparency: Diminishes blur effects and background translucency to improve text legibility and UI clarity.
  • Increase Contrast: Heightens color contrast between foreground elements and backgrounds to make content easier to distinguish.
  • Differentiate Without Color: Replaces interface states that rely exclusively on color with alternative visual indicators, such as shapes or icons.
  • Smart Invert: Reverses screen colors for the selected app while preserving the original appearance of images, videos, and certain graphical assets.
  • Reduce Motion: Disables or tones down rapid UI animations, screen transitions, and parallax effects within that specific app.
  • Auto-Play Video Previews: Controls whether video previews play automatically while browsing content inside the app, helping prevent unwanted motion or data usage.
