iOS 15 Notes Tag Browser Search Updates
Apple's iOS 15 introduced system-wide tagging and a dedicated Tag Browser to the Notes app, significantly expanding how users organize and retrieve information. This update enables dynamic filtering through tag combinations, allowing users to quickly narrow down large collections of notes by selecting multiple tags at once. Below is an overview of the key features and mechanics introduced for managing tag combinations in the Notes Tag Browser.
The Tag Browser Interface
In iOS 15, any note containing a hashtag (such as
#project or #finance) automatically populates
the new Tag Browser, located at the bottom of the main Folders view. The
Tag Browser displays an "All Tags" option alongside an alphabetical list
of every active tag currently used across your notes.
Multi-Tag Filtering Logic
The core enhancement to tag search is the ability to select multiple tags simultaneously:
- Intersection Filtering ("AND" Operator): When you tap more than one tag in the Tag Browser, the search applies an "AND" filtering rule. This means the Notes app only displays notes that contain all of the selected tags, rather than notes that contain any of them.
- Dynamic Availability: As you tap tags to refine your search, tags that do not share notes with your current selection become grayed out or inactive. This visual feedback prevents you from selecting impossible combinations that would yield zero results.
Managing and Deselecting Tag Combinations
Managing an active search combination is handled directly within the Tag Browser interface:
- Tapping to Toggle: Tapping an unselected tag adds it to the active search combination. Tapping an already selected (highlighted) tag removes it from the search parameters, immediately broadening your results.
- Resetting the Search: Tapping the "All Tags" button at the top of the browser instantly clears the custom tag selection and returns the view to every tagged note.
Saving Combinations as Smart Folders
To streamline repeated searches for specific tag combinations, iOS 15 introduced Smart Folders:
- Users can tap the More options (three dots) button or select "New Smart Folder" to convert an active multi-tag search into a persistent folder.
- Smart Folders automatically update as you create or edit notes, continuously pulling in any note that matches the designated tag criteria without requiring manual sorting.
