iOS 15 Notes App Activity View Updates

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced significant collaboration enhancements to the Notes app, centered around the new Activity View feature. This update transformed shared notes into dynamic workspaces by providing users with a comprehensive summary of edits, a detailed history of collaborator contributions, and inline visual indicators showing exactly who made changes and when.

The All-New Activity View Panel

The Activity View in iOS 15 provides a central hub for tracking collaborative work. By tapping the collaborator icon (the person icon) at the top of a shared note, users can access an activity panel that displays:

  • Recent Changes Summary: A consolidated overview showing what has been edited since the user last opened the note.
  • Daily Breakdown: A chronological, day-by-day log listing each collaborator's actions, making it easy to monitor ongoing progress across multi-author documents.

Highlight View (Show Highlights)

Alongside the Activity View panel, iOS 15 introduced visual highlights to quickly identify edits directly within the note body:

  • Color-Coded Edits: Collaborators are assigned distinct colors. Text, sketches, and additions made by specific contributors are highlighted in their designated color.
  • Swipe-to-Reveal Details: Swiping right from anywhere within the note reveals a sidebar showing collaborator names alongside timestamps indicating precisely when each edit was made.
  • Hide or Show Controls: Users can toggle highlights on or off through the Activity View settings to maintain a distraction-free reading experience when detailed tracking is not needed.

Integration with Mentions

The Activity View works seamlessly with the @mentions feature introduced in the same update. Typing an @ symbol followed by a collaborator's name sends them an immediate notification, directing them to the note. These mentions are cataloged within the Activity View stream, ensuring that assigned tasks and direct communications are readily visible alongside content edits.
