iOS 15 Messages Search Filter Updates

Apple's iOS 15 update brought notable enhancements to the Messages app, significantly overhauling how users search for and filter through past conversations and shared media. By introducing category-based filtering, integration with the "Shared with You" feature, and improved media recognition, the update makes locating specific text, images, links, and documents faster and more intuitive.

Categorized Search Results

In iOS 15, entering a query into the Messages search bar organizes results into distinct categories instead of presenting a single, unorganized list of text hits. The search interface separates findings into sections such as:

  • Conversations: Direct text matches found within standard chat threads.
  • Photos: Images matching the query or received from a specific contact.
  • Links: Web URLs shared across chats.
  • Locations: Map pins and addresses sent within messages.
  • Documents: PDFs, spreadsheets, and other files.

Tapping the "See All" option next to any category expands the view to display all matching items of that specific type, eliminating the need to scroll through long message threads.

Intelligent Photo and Text Recognition

Search filters in iOS 15 leverage on-device machine learning and the Live Text feature directly inside the Messages app. Users can find photos by searching for:

  • Visual content or subjects (e.g., searching "dog," "beach," or "car").
  • Text physically visible within an image (such as handwritten notes, recipes, or receipts).

"Shared with You" Filtering

iOS 15 introduced a dedicated "Shared with You" architecture. Content sent in Messages—including Apple Music links, Podcasts, News articles, Photos, and Safari links—is indexed and surfaced in a designated shelf within the conversation details view, as well as inside the corresponding system apps. This enables users to filter content by the sender or the type of media without manually digging through older messages.

Message List Filtering

iOS 15 also refined the primary inbox filter options for organizing incoming communication. By enabling message filtering in the device's Settings, users can sort their inbox view into:

  • All Messages: The complete message history.
  • Known Senders: Threads from people saved in the Contacts app.
  • Unknown Senders: Messages from unsaved numbers, verification services, or potential spam, keeping primary conversation lists uncluttered.
