iOS 15 Messages Pin Features Explained
Apple expanded the functionality of the Messages app in iOS 15 by introducing both targeted in-thread pinning capabilities and visual refinements to the top-level pinned conversation interface. While iOS 14 originally debuted the ability to pin up to nine contact threads at the top of the app, iOS 15 made these pinned spaces more informative and introduced an entirely new way to pin specific content within conversations.
In-Conversation Content Pinning
The most significant addition to the pinning workflow in iOS 15 was the ability to pin specific pieces of shared content inside any conversation thread:
- Pinning Shared Items: Users can long-press individual items—such as web links, photos, Apple Music tracks, podcasts, and News stories—and select Pin from the contextual menu.
- Dedicated Pins Section: Pinned items automatically populate a dedicated "Pins" section located within the conversation’s details view (accessed by tapping the contact or group avatar at the top of the thread).
- Shared with You Integration: Pinned content receives top priority in system-wide "Shared with You" sections across native apps like Safari, Photos, Apple Podcasts, and Apple TV.
- Search Prioritization: Pinned items are elevated in search results inside the Messages app, making critical links and documents easier to retrieve.
Focus Status Indicators
iOS 15 integrated system-wide Focus modes into the Messages interface. When a contact in a pinned conversation has their notifications silenced via a Focus mode (such as Do Not Disturb, Work, or Sleep), their status is communicated directly within the conversation interface. Users can see whether a recipient has silenced notifications, along with an option to notify them anyway in urgent situations.
Rich Media Previews in Pinned Bubbles
The floating preview bubbles that appear over pinned conversation avatars were upgraded to support iOS 15's new media formats:
- Photo Stacks and Collages: When multiple images are sent in a pinned conversation, the animated activity bubble displays miniature collage and stack representations rather than a single image thumbnail.
- Updated Memoji Avatars: Pinned conversations gained support for updated Memoji customization options introduced in iOS 15, including new clothing styles, multicolored headwear, and accessibility options, allowing pinned contact icons to display richer personalized avatars.
