iOS 15 Messages Location Sharing UI Changes
With the release of iOS 15, Apple streamlined location sharing inside the Messages app by deeply integrating Find My capabilities and modernizing the interface. These updates transformed location tracking from static snapshots into real-time interactive experiences, cleaned up the conversation details view, and simplified the process of broadcasting or requesting a contact's whereabouts.
Integrated Find My Map Widget
In previous versions of iOS, tapping the contact name and selecting the info icon presented a cluttered menu with basic text links and a separate, static map view. In iOS 15, Apple redesigned the contact card at the top of the conversation thread. If a contact is actively sharing their location, a prominent, interactive mini-map widget appears directly at the top of their details card. This map updates dynamically in real time rather than requiring a manual refresh.
Streamlined Sharing Options
The controls to initiate location sharing were reorganized into a cleaner, card-based interface. When tapping a contact's profile at the top of a chat, users are presented with two distinct, clarified options:
- Send My Current Location: Sends a one-time static pin showing where you are at that exact moment.
- Share My Location: Initiates dynamic, real-time tracking with a pop-up menu allowing users to choose between "Share for One Hour," "Share Until End of Day," or "Share Indefinitely."
Direct Access to Find My Controls
iOS 15 bridged the gap between Messages and the standalone Find My app. Tapping the location map inside a thread's detail view allows users to get directions, play sounds, or set up geofenced alerts—such as notifications when a contact leaves or arrives at a specific location—directly from the expanded interface without manually switching applications.
