iOS 15 Messages Contact Card Design Changes

With the release of iOS 15, Apple redesigned the contact card interface within the Messages app to provide a cleaner layout, faster communication shortcuts, and deeper integration with system features. This overview details the visual and functional updates made to the contact details view, including the enlarged profile layout, modernized action buttons, the new "Shared with You" section, and streamlined conversation settings.

Enlarged Profile Header and Action Buttons

In iOS 14, tapping a contact’s name at the top of a conversation opened a small drop-down menu with basic icons. In iOS 15, tapping the contact header opens a dedicated, full-screen contact card. The contact’s photo or Memoji appears noticeably larger at the top, directly accompanied by horizontal, rounded action buttons for Message, Call, Video (FaceTime), Mail, and Info. This layout minimizes navigation steps by placing primary communication methods immediately within reach.

Integration of "Shared with You"

The most substantial layout change is the addition of the "Shared with You" interface. Rather than burying shared attachments in simple thumbnail grids at the bottom of the card, iOS 15 organizes content into categorized sections:

  • Photos: Displayed as dynamic collages or stacks that can be browsed directly from the card.
  • Links: Formatted as rich visual previews rather than plain text URLs.
  • Documents and Media: Dedicated sections for files, music, and podcasts shared during the chat.

Each shared item includes an indicator allowing users to jump directly back to the specific message where it was originally sent.

Focus Status Indicators

The iOS 15 contact card incorporates Apple's Focus mode. If a contact has silenced their notifications using a Focus profile and has chosen to share their status, a banner appears near the top of their contact card indicating that notifications are silenced. This provides immediate context regarding their availability before sending a message.

Modernized Inset Grouped Settings

Below the shared media sections, the conversation settings were reformatted into modern, rounded inset lists matching the iOS 15 design language. Options such as Send Read Receipts, Hide Alerts, and location-sharing controls (Share My Location / Send My Current Location) are neatly grouped with clearer toggles, making individual thread customization faster and more visually cohesive.
