iOS 15 Mail App Swipe Gesture Features

Apple’s iOS 15 update brought refined management tools to the native Mail app, enhancing how users interact with their inboxes through swipe gestures. While maintaining the familiar left-and-right swiping mechanics, the update introduced improved customization, quicker triage options, and streamlined contextual menus to make processing emails faster and more intuitive.

Customizable Swipe Left and Swipe Right Actions

In iOS 15, users can customize both directional swipes to match their workflow. By navigating to Settings > Mail > Swipe Options, you can assign specific commands to both directions:

  • Swipe Left: Can be configured to trigger None, Mark as Read, Flag, or Move Message. Secondary actions like Trash or Archive remain accessible depending on your primary swipe setup.
  • Swipe Right: Typically used for quick status changes, this can be set to None, Mark as Read, Flag, or Move Message.

Full Swipe Execution

iOS 15 features full-swipe shortcuts that eliminate the need to tap a confirmation button:

  • Full Swipe Left: Swiping completely across the screen from right to left automatically performs your default primary action (such as Archiving or Deleting).
  • Full Swipe Right: Swiping completely across from left to right instantly marks an email as read or unread, depending on its current state.

Enhanced "More" Actions Menu

Performing a partial swipe to the left reveals a grey More button. In iOS 15, tapping this button opens an expanded contextual menu directly from the swipe interface, allowing you to:

  • Mute Thread: Silence notifications for specific, active email conversations.
  • Move to Junk: Instantly filter unwanted emails to the spam folder.
  • Notify Me: Receive direct alerts whenever a reply is received on a specific thread.
  • Move Message: Route the email to designated subfolders or mailboxes.

Context-Aware Archive vs. Trash Toggling

iOS 15 clarifies the swipe-to-delete behavior based on account configurations. If an account is set to archive messages by default, swiping left displays a purple Archive button. Users can quickly swap this behavior to a permanent Trash action within account advanced settings, ensuring swipe gestures perform the exact deletion method desired.
