iOS 15 Lock Screen Dimming Customization Options

Apple introduced significant refinements to Lock screen dimming in iOS 15 by integrating display brightness controls directly into its redesigned Focus system. Rather than restricting screen darkening solely to the scheduled Bedtime feature as in prior versions, iOS 15 expanded customization by allowing users to independently toggle Lock screen dimming across any default or user-created Focus profile, including Work, Personal, Fitness, and custom modes.

Focus-Specific Lock Screen Dimming

Prior to iOS 15, dimming the Lock screen was largely tied to the Do Not Disturb Bedtime mode. In iOS 15, this functionality became modular:

  • Per-Focus Activation: Users can enable the "Dim Lock Screen" setting selectively for individual Focus modes. For example, you can set the Lock screen to dim during a "Reading" or "Work" Focus without dimming it during a "Fitness" Focus.
  • Ambient Darkening: When enabled, the feature darkens the wallpaper and significantly reduces Lock screen brightness while the specific Focus mode is active, minimizing visual distractions in low-light or focus-intensive environments.

Silenced Notification Controls

Alongside the dimming toggle, iOS 15 introduced a companion setting under the Lock Screen options within each Focus mode:

  • Show Silenced Notifications: Users can decide whether incoming notifications silenced by the active Focus appear on the dimmed Lock screen or remain hidden in the Notification Center until the mode ends.

How to Access Lock Screen Dimming in iOS 15

To customize these options on an iPhone running iOS 15:

  1. Open Settings and tap Focus.
  2. Select an existing Focus mode or tap the + icon to create a custom one.
  3. Under the Options section, tap Lock Screen.
  4. Toggle Dim Lock Screen on or off according to your preference.
  5. Optionally toggle Show On Lock Screen to manage how incoming alerts appear while the display is dimmed.
