iOS 15 Keyboard Voice Dictation Toggle Changes

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced significant functional updates to its built-in keyboard voice dictation, changing how the feature is toggled, processed, and maintained during text entry. This guide outlines the key changes made to keyboard voice dictation behavior in iOS 15, including the removal of standard time limits, on-device toggling, and interface interactions.

Removal of the 60-Second Time Limit

Prior to iOS 15, tapping the microphone icon initiated a voice dictation session that automatically timed out after 60 seconds. In iOS 15, on devices equipped with an A12 Bionic chip or newer, this limit was removed. Dictation remains active indefinitely until the user manually toggles it off, allowing for continuous, uninterrupted speech-to-text input.

Manual Toggle and Dismissal

Because the automatic 60-second cutoff was eliminated, the toggle behavior relies on intentional user action:

  • Starting Dictation: Tapping the microphone icon on the keyboard immediately starts the voice input mode.
  • Stopping Dictation: The session only ends when the user taps the microphone icon again, taps the keyboard dismiss button, or begins typing manually.

On-Device Processing Integration

The behavior of the dictation toggle in iOS 15 is tied directly to on-device speech recognition. For supported languages and devices, toggling dictation on no longer requires an active internet connection. The processing occurs locally via the Apple Neural Engine, eliminating the lag previously associated with sending audio data to Apple servers before text appeared on screen.

Settings and Privacy Controls

In Settings > General > Keyboard, toggling the Enable Dictation switch now reflects local versus cloud processing capabilities:

  • When toggled on, supported devices alert users that dictation can process entirely offline.
  • Disabling the toggle immediately purges local temporary dictation caches and removes the microphone icon from the on-screen keyboard across all apps.
