With the release of iOS 15, Apple refined how incoming phone calls appear when users are engaged in full-screen applications like games, video players, and reading apps. Instead of halting your activity with an intrusive full-screen takeover, iOS 15 utilizes a streamlined, compact banner layout that preserves your active app state, minimizes visual disruption, and provides quick controls to answer, decline, or dismiss the alert.

The Compact Banner Design

When receiving a call while using a full-screen app, iOS 15 displays a floating banner at the top of the screen rather than interrupting your session. This banner features:

  • Contact Information: The caller’s name, phone number, or caller ID alongside their contact photo or initials.
  • Direct Actions: Clear, minimalist buttons to immediately accept (green) or decline (red) the call.
  • Audio Routing: Quick toggles to send the call directly to speaker or connected Bluetooth accessories like AirPods.

Uninterrupted Full-Screen Experience

In landscape-oriented full-screen apps—such as video streaming services or games—the notification adapts seamlessly:

  • Background Continuity: The application behind the banner continues running without being forced into a pause or exit state.
  • Swipe-to-Silence: Swiping up on the incoming call banner dismisses the notification from view. The call continues to ring silently in the background, represented only by a small indicator icon in the status bar, allowing you to finish your current task without rejecting the caller.
  • Return to Full-Screen Alert: If you change your mind after dismissing the banner, tapping the phone icon in the upper corner restores the call interface.

Managing Notification Layout Settings

Apple allows users to choose between the compact banner and the traditional full-screen layout. To adjust this preference:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

  3. Select Incoming Calls.
