iOS 15 Home Screen Widget Customization Guide
Apple introduced several significant enhancements in iOS 15 designed to give users greater control over their Home Screen widget layouts. These updates expanded on the foundation laid in iOS 14 by adding intelligent automation to Smart Stacks, introducing new widget sizes and apps, and enabling contextual layout configurations through Focus modes and iPadOS integration.
Enhanced Smart Stacks and Widget Suggestions
The primary tool added for managing multiple widgets within a single footprint is the upgraded Smart Stack menu. When editing a stack in iOS 15, users gain access to two distinct toggles:
- Smart Rotate: Automatically flips through stacked widgets throughout the day based on contextual usage patterns, location, or time.
- Widget Suggestions: A new predictive feature that dynamically inserts relevant widgets into your stack based on past activity or current needs, even if you have not manually added them. Users can quickly keep or dismiss suggested widgets directly from the stack.
Contextual Home Screens via Focus Modes
iOS 15 introduced Focus modes (such as Work, Personal, and Sleep), which allow users to create dedicated Home Screen page configurations tailored to specific activities:
- Custom Page Selection: You can designate specific Home Screen pages containing distinct sets of widgets to appear only when a specific Focus is active.
- Layout Switching: This feature hides irrelevant pages and widgets automatically, allowing you to display productivity widgets during work hours and entertainment or fitness widgets in the evening.
Drag-and-Drop Stack Management
Reorganizing existing widget stacks is more intuitive in iOS 15. By long-pressing a stack and selecting "Edit Stack," users can:
- Drag and drop individual widgets up or down to manually adjust their sequential order.
- Swipe to remove individual widgets without having to delete and recreate the entire stack.
New Native Widgets and iPadOS Layout Integration
Alongside layout controls, Apple expanded the variety of available tools to customize Home Screen organization:
- New First-Party Widgets: Native options were added for Contacts, Find My, Game Center, App Store, and Sleep, allowing for more comprehensive personal dashboards.
- iPadOS 15 Grid Placement: On iPadOS 15, widgets were liberated from the Today View sidebar, allowing them to be placed anywhere among app icons across the Home Screen grid.
- Extra-Large Widget Tier: Apple introduced an "Extra Large" (XL) widget size class designed specifically for the larger display area of the iPad Home Screen.
