iOS 15 Focus Mode: Filter Calls & Allow Emergencies

Apple’s iOS 15 introduced Focus mode to give users granular control over their digital interruptions by silencing non-essential notifications and phone calls. By customizing allowed contact lists, activating call-repetition safeguards, and utilizing system-level Emergency Bypass settings, users can completely block everyday distractions while guaranteeing that critical and emergency calls always reach them.

How Focus Mode Filters Non-Essential Calls

Focus mode replaces and expands upon the traditional "Do Not Disturb" feature by allowing you to create context-specific modes, such as Work, Personal, or Sleep. When a Focus mode is enabled, the operating system applies strict filtering rules to inbound calls:

  • Allowed People List: Within any Focus profile, you can specify exactly which contacts have permission to reach you. Any incoming call from someone not explicitly added to this list is automatically silenced and sent to voicemail without waking your screen or ringing your device.
  • Group Filtering: Focus allows you to filter incoming calls based on existing groups in your Contacts app. Under the Allow Calls From menu, you can choose between Everyone, No One, Favorites, or All Contacts. Choosing Favorites, for instance, filters out any caller who has not been pre-selected as a trusted contact.

How Emergency Contacts Bypass the Filter

To prevent safety risks, iOS 15 provides multiple mechanisms to ensure genuine emergencies pierce through any active Focus filter.

1. Repeated Calls

Within the settings of any specific Focus profile, you can enable the Allow Repeated Calls toggle. When active, if a caller—even one who is not on your allowed list—calls you a second time within three minutes, iOS recognizes the attempt as potentially urgent and allows the call to ring normally.

2. Emergency Bypass via the Contacts App

The most reliable way to ensure a specific person can always reach you is the Emergency Bypass feature. This setting is configured per contact and overrides both Focus mode and the physical Silent switch:

  1. Open the Contacts app and select your designated emergency contact.
  2. Tap Edit in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap Ringtone.
  4. Toggle the Emergency Bypass switch to the On position.
  5. Tap Done.

Once enabled, any call from this contact will ring out loud and vibrate immediately, regardless of which Focus mode is currently active or how restrictive your settings are. Repeat this process under the Text Tone section if you also want emergency text messages from that person to bypass the filter.
