iOS 15 Downtime on Demand: Restrict Apps Instantly

Apple introduced "Downtime on Demand" in iOS 15 to give users the ability to lock down non-essential applications immediately without modifying their preconfigured Screen Time routines. By acting as a temporary, manual override, this feature applies instant digital boundaries—silencing notifications and restricting access to all but essential apps—while ensuring that your everyday, automated downtime schedule remains completely intact once the session ends.

What Is Downtime on Demand?

In earlier versions of iOS, activating Downtime required either waiting for a scheduled window to trigger or manually editing the master schedule to force a shutdown. iOS 15 resolved this friction by introducing an ad-hoc trigger: Turn On Downtime Until Schedule (or Turn On Downtime Until Tomorrow if no routine is set).

This function instantly initiates a Downtime session that runs in real time, locking designated apps until the next scheduled block begins or the following morning arrives.

How It Restricts App Usage Instantly

Once activated, Downtime on Demand enforces the standard Screen Time restriction framework immediately:

  • App Darkening and Hourglass Icons: The icons of restricted apps immediately dim on the Home Screen, accompanied by a small hourglass badge.
  • Access Blocks: Launching a restricted app displays a full-screen "Time Limit" splash screen, preventing standard interaction.
  • Notification Suppression: Incoming alerts and badges from restricted apps are muted, reducing visual distractions.
  • Enforcing Exceptions: Only apps explicitly placed in the Always Allowed list (such as Phone, Maps, or Messages) remain fully interactive. Communication Limits also apply, restricting incoming and outgoing calls to pre-approved contacts.

Preserving Regular Schedules

The core advantage of Downtime on Demand is that it functions as an overlay rather than an edit to your configuration.

When you trigger an on-demand session, iOS 15 keeps your underlying daily rules stored in memory. The temporary lock remains active only until the system reaches the next scheduled transition point. For example, if you initiate Downtime on Demand at 2:00 PM and your standard schedule is set to run from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, the device bridges the gap without overwriting the 10:00 PM trigger. Once the cycle concludes or is manually canceled, the regular schedule automatically resumes control without requiring any re-configuration.

How to Activate It

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad running iOS 15 or later.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. Select Downtime.
  4. Tap Turn On Downtime Until Schedule (or Turn On Downtime Until Tomorrow).

To end the session early, return to the same menu and tap Turn Off Downtime, which instantly restores standard app access while leaving your automated schedule ready for its next cycle.
