iOS 15 Downtime on Demand: Restrict Apps Indefinitely

Downtime on demand in iOS 15 gives users immediate, manual control over their device usage by locking down non-essential applications without relying on a pre-set schedule. By toggling Downtime manually within Screen Time, you can enforce device restrictions that remain active indefinitely until you choose to disable them. This guide explains how Downtime on demand functions, how it enforces indefinite app blocking, and how to configure it on your iOS 15 device.

How Downtime on Demand Works

Prior to iOS 15, Downtime primarily functioned through automated daily schedules. iOS 15 introduced the ability to trigger Downtime instantly on demand. When activated without an active automated schedule, the system puts your device into a restricted state immediately.

Because there is no scheduled end time attached to an unscheduled manual activation, the restriction does not automatically turn off after a set number of hours. It persists through device restarts and continues indefinitely until you manually tap the option to turn it off.

App Restrictions and System Behavior

Once Downtime is manually turned on:

  • Blocked Apps: All standard applications dim on the Home Screen, and a small hourglass icon appears next to their names. Tapping a blocked app opens an overlay stating that a time limit has been reached.
  • Always Allowed Apps: Only apps designated under the "Always Allowed" list in Screen Time remain accessible. By default, Phone, Messages, FaceTime, and Maps are permitted, but these can be customized to include only the tools you strictly require.
  • Bypassing the Limit: If a Screen Time passcode is set, users cannot bypass the restriction without entering the passcode. If no passcode is set, users can bypass limits temporarily by tapping "Ask For More Time" or "Ignore Limit."

How to Enable Indefinite Downtime on iOS 15

To restrict access to your apps indefinitely, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone running iOS 15.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. If you want strict enforcement, tap Use Screen Time Passcode and set a dedicated PIN.
  4. Tap Downtime.
  5. Ensure the Scheduled toggle is turned Off. Leaving the schedule disabled prevents the system from automatically ending Downtime at a pre-set time.
  6. Tap Turn On Downtime Until Tomorrow or Turn On Downtime.

Because no schedule is configured, the restrictions remain active until you return to this menu and tap Turn Off Downtime.

Customizing Allowed Apps

To control which applications remain usable during on-demand Downtime:

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap Always Allowed.
  3. Use the red minus (-) icons to remove apps you want blocked, or the green plus (+) icons to permit specific tools (such as work apps, navigation, or emergency utilities).
  4. Select whether incoming calls are allowed from Everyone or Specific Contacts during Downtime.
