iOS 15 Dictionary and Look Up Improvements
Apple introduced several significant enhancements to dictionary definitions and lookup tools in iOS 15, making information retrieval faster, more intuitive, and deeply integrated across the entire operating system. The update overhauled the traditional Look Up interface, introduced the ability to define words directly from photos using Live Text, expanded multilingual dictionary support, and integrated rich contextual information alongside standard lexical definitions.
Unified Look Up Interface
In iOS 15, the Look Up feature received a complete visual redesign. Instead of presenting a fragmented list of sources, iOS 15 unifies dictionary definitions with related web content, Siri Knowledge, App Store links, and Wikipedia entries into a streamlined, compact view. The dictionary definition is prioritized at the top of the results card, allowing users to quickly read word origins, phonetic transcriptions, and meanings without navigating away from their current app.
Live Text Integration
One of the most notable additions is the integration between system dictionaries and Live Text. iOS 15 allows users to interact with text inside photos, screenshots, Safari images, and the live Camera viewfinder. By highlighting printed or handwritten text in an image, users can tap "Look Up" to instantly retrieve full dictionary definitions, extending reference capabilities beyond digital text to the physical world.
Expanded Multilingual Dictionaries
iOS 15 broadened its linguistic capabilities by adding several new bilingual and monolingual dictionaries. The update added support for languages including Urdu, Tamil, Telugu, and Gujarati bilingual dictionaries with English, as well as an expanded Simplified Chinese idiom dictionary. Users can manage, download, and activate these dictionaries through Settings > General > Dictionary.
Visual Look Up
Alongside standard text definitions, iOS 15 introduced Visual Look Up. While standard dictionary lookup defines words, Visual Look Up identifies recognized objects—such as plants, dog breeds, art, and landmarks—within the Photos app. Tapping the "Info" icon on an eligible image provides a dictionary-like overview of the subject, combining encyclopedic knowledge with visual recognition.
Spotlight Search Enhancements
Spotlight search on the Home Screen was upgraded to surface dictionary definitions more prominently. Typing a word directly into Spotlight displays the full lexical definition alongside rich snippets, enabling quick reference searches without opening a web browser or a dedicated third-party dictionary application.
