iOS 15 Control Center Customization Options

Apple’s iOS 15 expanded Control Center personalization by introducing several new toggles and modular controls rather than altering the underlying grid structure. While the core interface maintained its standard fixed-card design, users gained the ability to integrate new system capabilities directly into the pull-down menu through the Settings app. This guide covers the specific controls introduced in iOS 15, how they altered the available layout configurations, and how to manage them.

New Toggles Added in iOS 15

In iOS 15, customization expanded primarily through new modular tiles that users could add to the lower section of the Control Center. The newly added controls included:

  • Focus Mode: Replacing the legacy Do Not Disturb control, the Focus module allowed users to activate specific profiles (such as Work, Personal, or Sleep) and switch between them directly from the interface.
  • Announce Notifications: A dedicated toggle allowing users to enable or disable Siri’s ability to read incoming alerts aloud through supported AirPods or Beats headphones.
  • Background Sounds (Hearing): While the Hearing toggle existed previously, iOS 15 integrated the Background Sounds feature directly into it, allowing users to play masking sounds (such as rain, ocean, or white noise) without opening the Settings app.
  • Sound Recognition: An accessibility shortcut enabling users to quickly toggle detection for environmental sounds like doorbells, sirens, or crying babies.

How to Customize the Control Center Layout

In iOS 15, layout customization was managed entirely through the Settings app rather than directly on the Control Center screen.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Control Center.
  3. Under the Included Controls section, tap the red minus icon to remove a control.
  4. Under the More Controls section, tap the green plus icon next to any new iOS 15 toggle (such as Announce Notifications or Sound Recognition) to place it in the Control Center.
  5. Touch and hold the three horizontal lines next to any included item, then drag it up or down to change its placement order in the grid.

Layout Limitations in iOS 15

While iOS 15 offered more controls to place within the grid, the layout itself remained semi-rigid. The top cluster—consisting of network toggles, media playback, orientation lock, screen mirroring, and volume/brightness sliders—remained permanently fixed. Customization was limited strictly to the lower grid of optional single-tile and double-tile shortcut icons.
