iOS 15 Control Center Changes and New Toggles
Apple introduced several practical updates to the Control Center in iOS 15, focusing on productivity, contextual settings, and privacy. While the core grid layout remained familiar, Apple replaced legacy shortcuts like Do Not Disturb with the dynamic Focus system, added per-app controls for accessibility, integrated real-time audio and video effects, and expanded hearing controls.
Focus Replaces Do Not Disturb
The most prominent update in iOS 15 was the replacement of the standalone Do Not Disturb toggle with the new Focus module. Tapping the Focus toggle opens a menu allowing users to switch between customized profiles such as Personal, Work, Sleep, or custom user-created states, rather than simply silencing all notifications uniformly. Long-pressing the icon provides quick access to duration settings, including enabling a Focus mode for one hour, until the evening, or until leaving a specific location.
App-Specific Text Size Adjustments
In iOS 15, the Text Size toggle gained contextual flexibility. When activated, the slider now includes a segment toggle at the bottom allowing users to apply the adjusted text scale exclusively to the currently open app or across the entire system. This eliminated the need to permanently change system-wide font scaling just to read content in a single poorly scaled application.
Announce Notifications
A dedicated toggle for Announce Notifications was added to the Control Center options. When enabled, this shortcut allows Siri to automatically read time-sensitive incoming notifications and messages through compatible AirPods and Beats headphones. Users can tap the icon to temporarily mute or unmute notification announcements without navigating through the Settings app.
Dynamic Audio and Video Effects
When an active camera or voice call is running (such as FaceTime or supported third-party apps like Zoom), iOS 15 introduces dynamic tiles at the very top of the Control Center:
- Mic Mode: Allows users to switch between Standard audio, Voice Isolation (which blocks ambient background noise), and Wide Spectrum (which amplifies environmental sounds).
- Video Effects: Allows users to toggle Portrait mode on or off to blur their background during video calls.
Background Sounds in Hearing Controls
The Hearing toggle (ear icon) received an integrated Background Sounds feature. Designed to minimize distractions and mask environmental noise, this control lets users activate ambient audio directly from the tile, with options for balanced noise, ocean, rain, stream, and white noise without requiring third-party audio apps.
Privacy Permission Indicators
While privacy dots (green for camera, orange for microphone) appear in the status bar, pulling down the Control Center in iOS 15 exposes an interactive privacy report at the top of the screen. Tapping this indicator details which application is actively accessing—or recently accessed—the microphone, camera, or precise location data.
Updated Apple TV Remote Module
The virtual Apple TV Remote accessed through the Control Center received an interface overhaul in iOS 15. The updated layout mimics the physical design of the redesigned Siri Remote, providing clearer navigation controls, a dedicated power button, and a mute button.
