iOS 15 Contacts Custom Relationship Label Updates

Apple's iOS 15 introduced significant improvements to the Contacts app, specifically enhancing how users define and manage family, social, and professional connections. This article covers the expansion of predefined kinship terms, improved custom relationship labeling, and the resulting upgrades to Siri integration and cross-device synchronization.

Expanded Predefined Kinship and Family Labels

Prior to iOS 15, the "Related Name" field in the Contacts app relied on a limited set of traditional roles such as parent, spouse, sibling, or friend. iOS 15 substantially expanded this catalog to include dozens of precise, culturally diverse, and non-traditional kinship terms.

Key additions include:

  • Hierarchical Sibling Designations: Options to specify birth order, such as "Older Brother," "Younger Brother," "Older Sister," and "Younger Sister."
  • Blended Family Roles: Direct support for step-family relationships, including stepmother, stepfather, stepson, and stepdaughter.
  • Extended In-Law Designations: Granular options for various extended family connections, such as co-brother-in-law and specific aunt/uncle branches.
  • Inclusive and Gender-Neutral Options: Broader non-gendered terms for partners, spouses, and extended relatives.

Streamlined Custom Label Creation

While custom labels existed in earlier versions of iOS, iOS 15 made the creation and management of user-defined labels more intuitive:

  1. Open the Contacts app and select your personal contact card.
  2. Tap Edit in the top-right corner.
  3. Scroll down and tap add related name.
  4. Tap the label tag to the left of the field to view the expanded list.
  5. Scroll to the bottom and select Add Custom Label to type any unique title not included in the default directory.

In iOS 15, custom labels stay neatly associated with the contact record without defaulting to generic tags like "Other" when shared or synced.

Enhanced Siri Integration

The primary functional benefit of the updated relationship labels in iOS 15 is improved natural language processing through Siri. When an expanded or custom relationship label is assigned:

  • Siri accurately resolves spoken queries like "Call my younger brother" or "Send a message to my stepmother" without requiring you to state the person's full name.
  • If you ask Siri to reach out using a relationship term that is not yet configured, the assistant prompts you to assign that relationship on the spot, automatically creating the link in the Contacts app.

Improved iCloud and Cross-Platform Syncing

Before iOS 15, creating custom labels on an iPhone sometimes caused formatting errors or omitted labels on Macs or older iPadOS versions. With iOS 15, Apple updated the underlying vCard synchronization protocol across iCloud, ensuring that both expanded presets and user-generated custom labels persist accurately across macOS Monterey, watchOS 8, and iPadOS 15.
