iOS 15 Contacts Communication Preferences
Apple’s iOS 15 introduced several refinements to the Contacts app, focusing on how users manage and initiate interactions with their connections. This update streamlined the process of setting default communication methods, improved integration with third-party messaging and calling services, and aligned contact preferences with new system-wide features like Focus modes.
Direct Selection of Preferred Communication Channels
In iOS 15, the quick-action buttons located directly below a contact's name (Message, Call, Video, and Mail) became more intuitive for setting preferences:
- Long-Press Configuration: Long-pressing any of the primary action buttons allows users to assign a specific phone number, email address, or third-party service (such as WhatsApp, Skype, or Telegram) as the default option for that contact.
- Persistent Defaults: Once a specific channel is selected through the long-press menu, iOS remembers the choice, making subsequent taps automatically trigger that preferred route instead of prompting the user.
Third-Party App Integration
Prior to iOS 15, native services like Phone, Messages, and FaceTime were heavily favored by default. iOS 15 improved CallKit and Siri integration to make alternative communication platforms first-class options within individual contact cards:
- Contacts with multiple installed calling or messaging profiles display those services directly within the communication pop-up menus.
- Users can set third-party VoIP apps as the primary "Call" or "Video" button destination on a per-contact basis.
Focus and Communication Limits Alignment
Communication preferences in iOS 15 were also linked to the newly introduced Focus system:
- Allowed Notifications: Users can designate specific contacts who are permitted to break through active Focus filters.
- Emergency Bypass: The option to allow calls and messages from vital contacts regardless of Do Not Disturb or Focus settings remained accessible and prominently featured within the contact's ringtone and text-tone preference settings.
