iOS 15 Contact Share Sheet Changes Explained
Apple introduced notable usability and privacy updates to the contact share sheet in iOS 15, refining how users share contact cards and interact with suggested contacts. The update brought granular field selection when exporting contact cards, enhanced app indicators on the suggested contacts row, and improved management controls for suggested individuals. These changes focused on delivering greater privacy, visual clarity, and control during the sharing process.
Selective Field Sharing for Contact Cards
The most significant change to the contact-sharing workflow in iOS 15 is the ability to filter out specific information before sending a contact card. In previous versions, tapping "Share Contact" automatically bundled the entire vCard containing all stored numbers, home addresses, personal emails, notes, and photos.
With iOS 15, the share sheet interface introduced a dedicated field selection screen. When you tap "Share Contact" on a contact card, you can tap individual fields to check or uncheck details like:
- Specific phone numbers (e.g., sharing a work line while excluding a personal mobile number)
- Email addresses
- Physical street addresses
- Profile photos and nicknames
- Notes and sensitive personal entries
This interface allows users to transmit only relevant details to recipients, preventing accidental oversharing of sensitive data.
Visual App Badges on Suggested Contacts
The top row of the iOS share sheet, which displays frequently contacted people, received a visual layout upgrade in iOS 15. Each contact profile icon now features a prominent app badge in the bottom-right corner.
This badge indicates the specific messaging platform—such as Messages, WhatsApp, Slack, or Mail—that will be used to send the content. In prior releases, identifying which platform a suggested contact bubble would trigger was not always clear, leading to accidental shares across the wrong communication channels.
"Suggest Less" Management Controls
iOS 15 streamlined how users curate the contact suggestions row directly from the share sheet layout. Users can long-press (Haptic Touch) on any suggested contact bubble to open a quick contextual menu. From this menu, selecting "Suggest Less" immediately removes that person from the top row, making space for more relevant contacts without needing to dive into system settings.
Modernized Layout and Grouped Actions
Alongside these functional adjustments, iOS 15 aligned the share sheet's overall aesthetic with modern system styling. The sheet uses softer rounded corners, clearer typography, and distinct grouped action lists beneath the sharing targets. When items are shared through Messages, the layout directly integrates with the "Shared with You" system, ensuring that outgoing and incoming shared media appear automatically in dedicated sections within compatible apps.
