iOS 15 Cellular Data Usage Breakdown Changes
With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced key adjustments to how iPhones track, organize, and display cellular data consumption in the Settings app. This guide outlines the specific updates made to the cellular data breakdown, including dynamic sorting of app usage, enhanced visibility for background system tasks, and new controls for managing data over high-speed networks.
Dynamic Sorting by Consumption
Prior to iOS 15, finding which apps consumed the most data often required scrolling through a long, semi-alphabetical list. In iOS 15, apps listed under the Cellular (or Mobile Data) menu are automatically sorted from the highest data consumer to the lowest. This makes it immediately clear which third-party applications are draining your data allowance without requiring manual calculation.
Granular System Services Reporting
iOS 15 expanded the transparency of Apple's built-in background processes. Tapping into System Services at the bottom of the cellular usage list provides a more detailed breakdown of internal processes, including:
- Software Updates: Tracks the data used for over-the-air iOS patches.
- iCloud and Cloud Services: Separately accounts for iCloud Drive syncs, photo library backups, and push notifications.
- Media and Siri: Distinguishes between Siri voice queries, Apple Music cache, and diagnostic logs sent back to Apple.
5G Data Mode Controls
For 5G-compatible devices running iOS 15, Apple integrated more explicit data controls under Cellular Data Options > Data Mode:
- Allow More Data on 5G: Permits higher-quality video streaming, FaceTime HD, and automatic iOS updates over cellular.
- Standard: Allows standard-definition streaming and standard background updates.
- Low Data Mode: Pauses automatic updates and background network tasks to conserve limited data plans.
Limit IP Address Tracking
iOS 15 introduced a dedicated toggle titled Limit IP Address Tracking within the cellular settings. When enabled, this feature works alongside Mail Privacy Protection and iCloud Private Relay to hide your device's IP address from known trackers across cellular networks.
Current Period Tracking and Resets
The display for the Current Period and Current Period Roaming remains a manual metric in iOS 15, meaning it does not automatically reset with your carrier's monthly billing cycle. However, the reset button remains at the bottom of the menu, displaying the exact timestamp of the last manual reset so users can accurately align tracking with their monthly plans.
