iOS 15 Cellular Data Roaming Menu Changes
Apple's iOS 15 update introduced subtle yet significant refinements to the cellular data settings, specifically optimizing how iPhones manage international roaming and next-generation connectivity. This article outlines the key changes made to the Cellular Data preference menu, including the integration of 5G roaming toggles, updated Data Mode behaviors, and improved controls for Dual SIM configurations.
Dedicated 5G Roaming Support
The most prominent change in iOS 15 was the addition of native 5G roaming options within the Voice & Data submenu. Prior to this update, roaming on supported carriers was predominantly restricted to LTE/4G profiles. In iOS 15, users with compatible hardware (iPhone 12 series and later) gained access to:
- 5G On / 5G Auto while Roaming: The menu now dynamically retains 5G preferences when connected to partner networks abroad, provided the carrier supports 5G roaming agreements.
- Smart Data Mode Abroad: The system uses Apple's Smart Data Mode to drop to LTE automatically while roaming if 5G speeds do not offer a noticeable improvement, preserving battery life.
Reorganized "Cellular Data Options" Hierarchy
Apple restructured the navigation path under Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) to reduce ambiguity:
- The primary Data Roaming toggle remains within Cellular Data Options, but secondary features (such as Voice & Data and Data Mode) are consolidated into a unified panel.
- Selecting Data Mode allows users to enforce Low Data Mode, Standard, or Allow More Data on 5G directly alongside the roaming switch, preventing unwanted background data usage and unexpected carrier charges while abroad.
Streamlined Dual SIM Line Management
For users operating with Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM), iOS 15 redesigned how roaming preferences are assigned:
- Instead of a shared roaming toggle, each active line features its own independent Cellular Data Options menu.
- Users can toggle Data Roaming on for an international travel eSIM while strictly keeping it disabled on their primary home carrier SIM.
- The Allow Cellular Data Switching option was repositioned directly below the primary line selector to prevent the phone from automatically switching data to a roaming line that incurs high fees.
