iOS 15 Camera Share Sheet Image Selection Changes

Apple introduced several significant usability enhancements to the image selection flow within the camera and photo sharing interface in iOS 15. These updates refined how users review, select, and distribute multiple photos directly from the Camera app's preview screen. By introducing an integrated photo carousel, streamlined selection toggles, and direct privacy controls, iOS 15 eliminated repetitive steps and made the sharing workflow faster and more intuitive.

Prior to iOS 15, sharing multiple photos directly after taking them required backing out to the full camera roll or manually entering a dedicated selection mode. In iOS 15, tapping the Share button on a recently captured photo reveals a horizontal thumbnail strip at the top of the Share Sheet.

This carousel displays recently captured items, allowing you to swipe horizontally through your latest shots and tap to include or exclude them from the current share action without ever leaving the Share Sheet.

Direct Checkmark and Numbered Selection

Within the inline preview strip, each photo displays an explicit selection badge (a circular checkmark). Tapping thumbnails instantly toggles their inclusion:

  • Visual Feedback: Selected photos display a distinct blue checkmark, clearly indicating which items are queued to send.
  • Order Preservation: The selection flow retains the chosen sequence, ensuring multi-image shares to Messages, Mail, or third-party apps maintain your preferred order.

Integrated Privacy and Metadata Options

At the top of the revised selection sheet, iOS 15 integrated an "Options" button directly above the image tray. This control gives users granular management over what data is sent with the selected batch:

  • Location Toggle: Users can strip geographic metadata from the selected images before sharing.
  • All Photos Data: Users can choose whether to include full edit histories and original RAW formats or send standard, flattened versions.

Contextual Workflow Preservation

The camera share interface in iOS 15 ensures that completing or canceling a share operation returns you directly to the active camera viewfinder. By reducing modal transitions and embedding the image picker directly into the sharing sheet, the update minimizes friction between shooting photos and distributing them.
