iOS 15 Camera Roll Cropping Interface Changes
Apple introduced several streamlined adjustments to the photo editing tools in iOS 15, focusing on a cleaner, more intuitive interface when cropping and adjusting perspective in the Photos app. This article covers the specific changes made to the cropping workflow, including the relocation of the aspect ratio tool, updated rotation controls, and subtle refinements to the perspective adjustment sliders.
Relocation of the Aspect Ratio Tool
The most significant functional change in the iOS 15 crop interface is the relocation of the aspect ratio icon. In earlier versions of iOS, the aspect ratio selector was located at the bottom of the screen (or along the bottom toolbar). In iOS 15, Apple moved this icon to the top-right corner of the display. Tapping this multi-rectangle icon opens the format menu, allowing you to choose between Freeform, Square, Wallpaper, and various standard aspect ratios (such as 16:9, 4:3, and 5:4).
Repositioned Flip and Rotate Icons
To reduce visual clutter at the bottom of the screen, the flip (mirror) and 90-degree rotate tools were relocated to the top-left corner of the editing screen. Grouping these transformational tools at the top of the interface separates basic canvas orientation from fine-tuning sliders.
Integrated Straighten and Perspective Controls
The bottom toolbar in iOS 15 focuses entirely on micro-adjustments:
- Straighten: The primary wheel allows manual degree-by-degree rotation or automated alignment via the "Auto" toggle.
- Vertical Perspective: Adjusts the keystone effect vertically.
- Horizontal Perspective: Adjusts the keystone effect horizontally.
These three tools remain accessible via circular icons directly beneath the photo, with a numeric degree indicator appearing on the slider to provide precise feedback during adjustment.
Aspect Ratio Orientation Toggle
When an aspect ratio preset is selected, iOS 15 includes an integrated orientation toggle right above the ratio presets. This allows users to switch between Portrait and Landscape orientations for any chosen ratio with a single tap, removing the need to manually rotate the frame to change orientation.
