iOS 15 Bluetooth Connection List Changes

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced refined controls and visual adjustments to the Bluetooth connection list in the Settings app. These updates were designed to streamline device management, clarify connection states, and provide faster access to accessory settings without cluttering the user interface.

Direct Disconnect by Tapping

In iOS 15, Apple streamlined how users manage active connections directly from the list. Tapping a currently connected device in the My Devices section disconnects it immediately, switching its status to "Not Connected." Prior versions sometimes required navigating into the device's sub-menu or turning Bluetooth off and on again to break an active link without fully unpairing the accessory.

Clearer Connection Status Indicators

The connection list features improved typography and status indicators. Active connections are explicitly labeled as "Connected" in bold text, while paired but inactive devices are marked as "Not Connected." This contrast makes it significantly easier to scan a long list of paired accessories and identify which hardware is currently routing audio or data.

Expanded Device Type Categorization

While Apple introduced device type tagging in iOS 14.4, iOS 15 integrated this feature more thoroughly across the connection interface. By tapping the information icon (i) next to any audio device in the list, users can classify the device as:

  • Car Stereo
  • Headphone
  • Hearing Aid
  • Speaker
  • Other

Classifying devices accurately directly affects how iOS handles audio alerts, volume warnings, and headphone safety measurements.

Deeper Accessory Controls for AirPods and Beats

For supported Apple and Beats accessories, tapping the information icon (i) next to the device in the connection list exposes expanded native controls in iOS 15. This includes settings for Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Find My network integration toggles, and Noise Control modes, reducing the need to navigate through separate menus to configure audio hardware.
