iOS 15 Battery Usage Display Changes
Apple refined the iPhone battery management interface in iOS 15 to give users clearer insights into how their device consumes power. This update brought visual enhancements to the 24-hour and 10-day consumption graphs, improved the distinction between active and background app usage, and added specific indicators for charging states and power modes.
Clearer Screen On vs. Screen Off Tracking
Prior versions of iOS often blurred the line between general usage and active display time. In iOS 15, the Battery menu explicitly separates Screen On and Screen Off times directly above the usage chart.
Tapping any app in the list toggles between the percentage of battery used and the exact duration of activity, clearly showing:
- On Screen: The exact hours and minutes the app was actively used.
- Background: The time the app consumed power while minimized or performing background tasks.
Color-Coded Chart Indicators
The battery level charts (available for the Last 24 Hours and Last 10 Days) received updated visual cues to provide immediate context for battery state changes:
- Green Bars: Indicate normal battery levels and standard charging periods.
- Yellow Bars: Indicate periods when Low Power Mode was engaged.
- Charging Icons: Small lightning bolt icons below the timeline mark exactly when the device was connected to power.
Optimized Battery Charging Insights
iOS 15 added specific visual notifications on the battery graph when charging was temporarily halted. If Optimized Battery Charging or high device temperatures delayed a full charge, the chart highlights the pause interval, helping users understand why their device did not immediately reach 100%.
Enhanced Hourly and Daily Scrubbing
The interactivity of the battery graph was updated for quicker diagnostic analysis:
- Tapping an individual hour column in the Last 24 Hours view or a day column in the Last 10 Days view isolates that specific timeframe.
- The app list below automatically reorders to display only the applications that consumed power during the selected window.
- Tapping outside the selected column resets the view to the overall average.
