iOS 15 Audio Output Selector Changes Explained
With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced several refinements to the Control Center's audio output selector (AirPlay menu) to improve usability, device grouping, and accessory management. This update streamlined the interface, making it easier to switch between output devices, manage multi-room AirPlay 2 audio, view accessory battery levels, and access advanced features like Spatial Audio without navigating deep into system settings.
Compact, Floating Card Design
The audio output interface shifted away from the full-width modal used in earlier releases to a more compact, floating card design. Tapping the AirPlay icon within the Now Playing Control Center widget brings up an overlay with rounded corners and updated blur effects that conform more closely to modern iOS interface standards.
Smarter Device Categorization
In iOS 15, the output list introduced clearer separation between different types of audio destinations:
- iPhone / Local Playback: The primary host device remains clearly marked at the top.
- Personal Audio: Bluetooth devices, AirPods, and Beats headphones are automatically prioritized and grouped at the top of the external list when in range.
- Speakers & TVs: AirPlay 2 targets, such as HomePods, Apple TVs, and third-party smart televisions, are organized into their own dedicated section below personal audio devices.
Enhanced AirPods and Accessory Integration
Apple integrated specific accessory details directly into the selector interface:
- Real-Time Battery Indicators: When connected to AirPods or compatible Beats products, the output selector displays battery glyphs and percentages alongside the device name, eliminating the need to check the Batteries widget.
- Spatial Audio and Noise Control Access: Long-pressing the volume slider or interacting with active AirPods within the selector provides quick toggles for Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode, and Spatial Audio (Fixed or Head Tracked).
Improved Multi-Room Audio Controls
Managing multi-room audio through AirPlay 2 was made more intuitive:
- Individual Volume Sliders: Selecting multiple speakers now displays clearer, individual volume controls under each active destination, alongside a master volume slider.
- Active Stream Indicators: Devices currently receiving an audio stream feature distinct checkmarks and active waveform animations, making it immediately apparent which speakers are broadcasting audio.
