iOS 15 Apple Books Audio Player Updates
With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced a streamlined redesign to the audio player interface within the Books app, focusing on modern aesthetics and improved accessibility for audiobook listeners. The update refreshed the full-screen playback screen, restructured transport controls, and made essential tools—such as the sleep timer and playback speed settings—much easier to reach.
Modernized Player Interface
The full-screen player transitioned to a cleaner, card-style layout that slides up smoothly from the bottom of the screen. The book cover art remains prominent, but the progress bar and scrubbing controls were refined with a thinner, less intrusive design, displaying remaining and elapsed time clearly below the track slider.
Reorganized Transport Controls
Apple reworked the primary playback controls for better one-handed usability:
- Central Play/Pause: The main play/pause button was enlarged for faster interaction.
- Skip Buttons: The dedicated 15-second skip backward and skip forward buttons were repositioned immediately adjacent to the play button, creating a unified control cluster.
Direct Access to Playback Speed
In previous versions, adjusting the narration speed required navigating through secondary menus. iOS 15 placed a dedicated speed button directly on the main playback interface. Tapping this button allows users to quickly cycle through speeds ranging from 0.75x to 2x without leaving the listening screen.
Prominent Sleep Timer
The sleep timer control was moved to the primary toolbar at the bottom of the player. Users can set a countdown—ranging from specific minute intervals to the end of the current chapter—with fewer taps than before.
Enhanced Chapter Navigation
A dedicated chapter list button was integrated alongside the bottom controls. Tapping it slides up a full table of contents, allowing listeners to jump directly between tracks or sections while keeping the current playback status in view.
Compact Mini-Player
When browsing the store or library while listening, the persistent mini-player at the bottom of the screen was visually updated to match the design language of iOS 15. It features a simplified layout with quick play/pause toggles and expands back into the full player with a single tap.
