iOS 15 App Privacy Report Location Tracking Explained
Apple’s App Privacy Report in iOS 15 provides an on-device audit trail that reveals how frequently third-party apps access sensitive hardware and data, including your location. By logging every instance an app requests coordinate data through system-level frameworks over a rolling seven-day window, the feature gives users complete visibility into foreground and background location usage.
System-Level Interception via Core Location
The logging process relies on iOS’s internal
CoreLocation framework rather than self-reporting by
individual apps. Whenever an app calls location APIs—such as requesting
a single coordinate update, monitoring geofences, or receiving
continuous stream updates—the system daemon (locationd)
handles the request.
During this transaction, the operating system intercepts the event and creates an immutable log entry. Because the logging happens at the operating system level, apps cannot bypass, conceal, or alter their recorded access history.
What the Frequency Log Captures
Within the Data & Sensor Access section of the App Privacy Report, location access is indexed per app with specific parameters:
- Timestamps: Every individual location ping is recorded with an exact date and time.
- Contextual State: The system notes whether the app accessed location data while actively in use on-screen (foreground) or running silently (background).
- Aggregate Totals: The report tallies the total number of accesses over the past seven days, allowing users to see how frequently an app checks their coordinates over time.
If an app maintains continuous navigation or tracking, iOS groups the continuous stream into an active session with specific start and end timestamps rather than flooding the log with second-by-second entries.
On-Device Storage and Data Export
All App Privacy Report data is stored locally on the device in an encrypted format. The metrics are not transmitted to Apple servers. Users who want to inspect the raw data can export it as an NDJSON (Newline Delimited JSON) file via the iOS Share Sheet. In this raw export, each location event includes:
- The app’s bundle identifier.
- The access category (
location). - The precise ISO-formatted timestamp.
- The authorization type utilized.
Viewing Location Logs in iOS 15
To view these logs, navigate to Settings > Privacy > App Privacy Report. Under the Data & Sensor Access heading, tapping Location lists every app that has accessed GPS or network-based coordinates, sorted by the most recent access or frequency. Tapping an individual app reveals the granular chronological history of every access event recorded within the last seven days.
