iOS 15 Accessibility Updates for VoiceOver
Apple’s iOS 15 release brought significant accessibility improvements for blind and low-vision users, focusing heavily on making visual content more interpretable and customizable through VoiceOver. This update expanded on-device intelligence to provide comprehensive image exploration, introduced custom image descriptions in native tools, enhanced screen recognition, and refined braille display support for a more efficient navigation experience.
Detailed Image Exploration
The standout feature for VoiceOver in iOS 15 is the ability to explore images in greater detail. Users can navigate photos by moving a finger across the screen to locate the exact positions of recognized objects, people, and text. VoiceOver announces the spatial relationship between items—such as identifying that a person is standing to the left of a tree—and can even interpret tabular data and receipts captured in images, reading rows and columns in logical order.
Custom Image Descriptions via Markup
iOS 15 introduced the ability to write custom image descriptions directly within the native Markup tool. When editing a photo in the Photos app or a document in Files, users can add persistent accessibility descriptions. VoiceOver reads these user-generated labels aloud, making personal photo libraries and shared documents far more accessible without needing third-party tagging tools.
Enhanced Screen Recognition
Building on the machine learning introduced in iOS 14, iOS 15 significantly improved Screen Recognition. VoiceOver can recognize interactive interface elements—such as buttons, tabs, and toggles—within third-party apps that lack native accessibility labels. The updated model reduces misidentifications and groups controls more intuitively.
VoiceOver Quick Settings
Users gained the ability to customize VoiceOver settings on the fly through a dedicated Quick Settings menu. This allows users to quickly toggle settings like speech rate, pitch, audio ducking, and punctuation levels without leaving their current app or digging through the main Settings menu.
Expanded Braille Display Support
iOS 15 improved braille accessibility by adding support for new braille tables, including additional contracted braille languages. The update also improved how VoiceOver handles text selection, panning, and formatting attributes when paired with refreshable braille displays, ensuring smoother navigation across long documents and web pages.
