How Walking Steadiness Works in iOS 15 Health App

Walking Steadiness in iOS 15 is a mobility feature within the Apple Health app that passively assesses your fall risk using sensors built directly into your iPhone. By automatically analyzing movement metrics such as step asymmetry, walking speed, and double support time while you carry your phone, the system categorizes your stability into distinct tiers and alerts you if your risk of falling increases.

The Metrics Behind the Feature

Walking Steadiness relies on the built-in accelerometer and gyroscope sensors on the iPhone. When you carry the phone in a pocket or near your waist while walking on flat ground, algorithms capture and analyze key biomechanical data points:

  • Walking Speed: How fast you walk on flat surfaces.
  • Step Length: The distance between your feet during consecutive steps.
  • Double Support Time: The percentage of time during a walk that both feet are in contact with the ground (higher percentages often correlate with lower balance).
  • Walking Asymmetry: The percentage of steps where your pace or movement differs between your left and right sides.

The system combines these metrics to generate a continuous score of stability without requiring active user input or an Apple Watch.

Steadiness Classifications

The Health app tracks these metrics over time and assigns your stability to one of three categories:

  1. OK: Your movement indicates normal stability with no elevated risk of falling within the next 12 months.
  2. Low: Your stability shows signs of decline, indicating an increased risk of falling.
  3. Very Low: Your movement shows significant impairment, indicating a substantially higher risk of falling.

Notifications and Fall Prevention

Users can opt in to receive balance notifications. If your score drops to "Low" or "Very Low," iOS generates an alert suggesting that your stability has declined. Alongside the alert, the Health app provides educational exercises designed to improve strength and balance, as well as printable data reports that can be shared with medical professionals.

Requirements for Proper Tracking

For Walking Steadiness to gather accurate data, the following conditions must be met:

  • The iPhone must be running iOS 15 or later.
  • The device must be carried in a front pocket or secured close to the waist.
  • Movement must occur on relatively flat, level ground over standard daily walking intervals. Carrying the phone in a backpack, purse, or hand does not yield accurate balance metrics.
