How to Use iOS 15 Background Sounds for Sound Therapy

Apple introduced native sound therapy tools directly into the iPhone operating system with iOS 15 through a feature called Background Sounds. Designed as a core Accessibility setting, Background Sounds produces ambient audio to help users mask environmental noise, alleviate tinnitus, minimize sensory overload, and improve focus or sleep without requiring third-party apps or subscription services.

Core Functionality and Sound Profiles

Background Sounds operates as a system-level audio engine. It provides six distinct, high-quality audio profiles categorized into synthetic noise variants and nature sounds:

  • Balanced Noise: A blend of higher and lower frequencies, commonly known as pink noise.
  • Bright Noise: A higher-pitched, crisp sound profile aligned with white noise.
  • Dark Noise: A deeper, bass-heavy profile corresponding to brown (or red) noise.
  • Ocean: Rhythmic crashing waves for relaxation and paced breathing.
  • Rain: Steady precipitation sounds designed to mask erratic indoor or outdoor interruptions.
  • Stream: Continuous flowing water aimed at aiding concentration and focus.

Once selected, the sound files download locally to the device, ensuring the feature functions seamlessly offline and consumes minimal system resources.

System Integration and Audio Layering

Unlike standard media players, Background Sounds runs persistently beneath the operating system's main audio channels.

  • Audio Mixing: The feature can remain active while media is playing. Users can adjust the master volume of the background sound independently from music, podcasts, or phone calls, allowing the ambient sound to provide a steady therapeutic layer beneath active listening.
  • Lock Screen Persistence: The audio continues to loop seamlessly even when the iPhone display is locked, preventing disruptions during sleep or focused study sessions.
  • Stop with Lock: Users can configure the audio to automatically halt when the iPhone is locked if they prefer not to have it running continuously.

Access and Controls

Background Sounds can be enabled and configured through two primary methods:

  1. System Settings: Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Background Sounds. From this menu, users can toggle the feature, select preferred sounds, adjust playback levels, and manage audio-layering behaviors.
  2. Control Center: For quick access, users can add the Hearing tile (represented by an ear icon) to the Control Center. Tapping this icon allows users to toggle Background Sounds on or off, switch audio profiles, and adjust output volume with minimal navigation.
