How to Organize Photos by Date in iOS 15

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced several enhancements to the Photos app that improve how users manage, search, and organize media across specific timeframes. While traditional user-created albums maintain standard sorting options, iOS 15 added direct metadata editing for capture dates, smarter date-based search queries, and dynamic date-range grouping through redesigned Memories, making chronological organization far more flexible and precise.

Manual Date and Time Adjustments

The most impactful date-related feature introduced in iOS 15 is the native ability to view and edit EXIF metadata directly inside the Photos app.

Previously, if a photo had incorrect timestamp information, it could not be reordered chronologically without third-party software. In iOS 15:

  • Adjusting Individual Photos: Swiping up on any photo reveals the Info (i) button. Tapping Adjust next to the date and time allows you to set a custom date, time, and time zone.
  • Batch Adjustments: You can select multiple photos, tap the Share sheet, and choose Adjust Date & Time to apply retroactive date ranges or uniform time adjustments across a batch.

Correcting these dates automatically rearranges the photos into their proper chronological positions in the Library and date-sorted albums.

The search engine within the Photos app received major upgrades in iOS 15, functioning as a dynamic tool for date-range organization. Users can filter their library by entering specific temporal phrases, such as:

  • Exact months and years (e.g., "July 2021")
  • Specific seasons (e.g., "Summer 2020")
  • Multi-year ranges or occasions (e.g., "Christmas 2018–2021")

Search results can then be shared, favorited, or added directly into dedicated user-created albums.

Redesigned Memories with Dynamic Date Ranges

iOS 15 overhauled the For You tab with an interactive Memories feature built heavily around algorithmically generated date ranges.

  • Pre-Set Date Groupings: The app automatically generates curated collections based on specific timeframes, such as "On This Day," "This Week in History," multi-day road trips, or customized weekend ranges.
  • Customization: Users can tap the title of a Memory to change the cover photo and date range representation, or browse individual days included within that specific event.

Chronological Sorting Within Albums

iOS 15 retains and streamlines the album sorting options first introduced in modern iOS versions. Inside any user-created album:

  1. Tap the More (...) menu in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Sort.
  3. Choose between Oldest to Newest or Newest to Oldest.

When paired with the new date-editing tools, this ensures albums reflect true historical order rather than the order in which items were imported or saved.
