How to Filter Text Alerts Using iOS 15 Focus Mode
Apple’s iOS 15 introduced Focus mode to give users granular control over their incoming alerts, allowing you to silence distractions while remaining reachable to select contacts. By configuring a Focus profile, you can filter out unwanted text message alerts by establishing an "allowed list" of senders, ensuring that messages from specific individuals or non-permitted contacts are delivered silently without sound, vibration, or banner notifications.
How the Filtering Mechanism Works
Focus mode filters text notifications through a whitelist approach rather than a manual blocklist. Instead of picking contacts to mute one by one, iOS 15 requires you to designate which contacts are permitted to break through your active Focus.
- Contact Identification: When an SMS or iMessage arrives, iOS checks the sender against the "Allowed People" list configured for the active Focus state.
- Notification Interception: If the sender is on the allowed list, the text alert appears normally with audio, haptics, and banner alerts. If the sender is not on the list, the system silences the alert entirely.
- Silent Delivery: The unwanted sender's text is not blocked or deleted. The message is still received in the Messages app and will appear in the Notification Center quietly, but your iPhone will not wake its screen, vibrate, or sound an alert.
Setting Up the Text Filter
To filter incoming message alerts:
- Open Settings on iOS 15 and tap Focus.
- Select an existing profile (such as Do Not Disturb, Work, or Personal) or tap the + icon to create a custom profile.
- Tap People under the Allowed Notifications header.
- Tap Add and select only the trusted contacts whose text alerts you want to receive. Any contact not added here will be automatically filtered out.
- In the Also Allow section, you can specify whether calls can bypass the filter, but text notifications will remain strictly limited to the individuals you manually selected.
Sender Feedback and Emergency Bypasses
When Focus mode silences text alerts from outside senders, iOS 15 manages sender expectations via two built-in tools:
- Share Focus Status: In the Messages app, iOS displays a status bar at the bottom of the conversation informing the sender that you have notifications silenced.
- Notify Anyway: If an urgent situation arises, the sender can tap an option to force the message through, triggering an immediate alert regardless of your Focus settings.
- Emergency Bypass: You can manually grant certain contacts unconditional access in their Contact Card under Ringtone/Text Tone > Emergency Bypass, which overrides any active Focus profile completely.
