How to Enable Per-App Bold Text on iOS 15

Apple introduced a dedicated accessibility feature in iOS 15 known as Per-App Settings, allowing users to customize display and text preferences—including bold text—for individual applications rather than applying them globally across the entire operating system. This article explains how the Per-App Settings feature works, how to configure bold text formatting for specific apps, and how to manage these preferences.

What Is Per-App Settings in iOS 15?

Prior to iOS 15, accessibility options like Bold Text, Larger Text, and Button Shapes could only be toggled system-wide. The introduction of Per-App Settings moved control to a granular level. Users can now assign visual adjustments to specific apps where reading might be difficult, while keeping the rest of iOS at default visual settings.

Within this menu, the "Bold Text" toggle forces the selected application to render its primary typography with a heavier font weight, improving contrast and legibility without altering the layout of other apps or the home screen.

How to Configure Bold Text for Specific Apps

Configuring bold text for an individual app takes only a few steps inside the main settings interface:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone running iOS 15 or later.
  2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
  3. Scroll to the very bottom of the menu and select Per-App Settings.
  4. Tap Add App.
  5. Choose the application you want to customize from the list, or select Home Screen to adjust system navigation elements.
  6. Tap the name of the app once it appears in your Per-App Settings list.
  7. Locate the Bold Text option and set it to On.

The changes apply immediately. When you launch the selected application, its text will appear bolded, while all other applications will remain unaffected.

Managing and Removing Custom Formatting

If you want to revert an app to system defaults, return to Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings. You can tap the customized app to turn Bold Text back to "Default" or "Off." Alternatively, swipe left on the app’s name in the main Per-App Settings list and tap Delete to remove all custom accessibility configurations associated with that application at once.
