How to Enable Bold Text for Specific Apps in iOS 15

Apple introduced a dedicated accessibility feature in iOS 15 called "Per-App Settings," which allows users to customize display and text preferences—including Bold Text—for individual applications rather than applying them globally across the entire operating system. This guide explains how this feature works and outlines the exact steps to enable bold text for only the apps you choose.

The iOS 15 Per-App Settings Feature

Prior to iOS 15, enabling bold text forced the change across the entire device, altering fonts on the Home Screen, in system menus, and within every compatible app. iOS 15 resolved this limitation by adding Per-App Settings at the bottom of the Accessibility menu. This tool lets you configure visual options—such as Bold Text, Larger Text, Increase Contrast, and Reduce Motion—tailored to the layout and readability needs of specific applications.

Steps to Toggle Bold Text for a Specific App

To enable bold text for an individual app on iOS 15:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
  3. Scroll to the very bottom of the page and select Per-App Settings.
  4. Tap Add App.
  5. Select the app you want to customize from the list of installed applications. You can also choose Home Screen if you only want changes applied to system navigation.
  6. Tap the name of the app you just added to view its specific customization options.
  7. Tap Bold Text and change the selection from Default to On.

Managing or Removing Per-App Customizations

The changes take effect immediately upon closing the Settings menu. If you ever want to revert the appearance back to normal:

  1. Return to Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings.
  2. Tap the customized app and switch Bold Text back to Default (or Off).
  3. Alternatively, swipe left on the app's name in the main Per-App Settings list and tap Delete to remove all custom accessibility configurations for that application at once.
