How Time-Sensitive Alerts Override Focus in iOS 15
Apple introduced Focus modes in iOS 15 to help users reduce distractions by silencing incoming calls and alerts. However, to prevent users from missing critical information, the system includes a priority tier called Time-Sensitive Notifications. This article explains the technical mechanism behind how these high-priority alerts bypass Focus restrictions, the criteria used to identify them, and how users can customize or disable the override.
The Interruption Level Framework
In iOS 15, Apple restructured its notification system into four distinct interruption levels: Passive, Active, Time-Sensitive, and Critical. Standard app alerts are classified as Active, which respect all Focus rules and are silenced when a Focus mode is enabled.
Time-Sensitive notifications occupy a higher tier. App developers
declare this status within their code using the UserNotifications
framework by assigning the notification an interruption level of
timeSensitive. Apple restricts this capability to alerts
that require immediate attention, such as food delivery arrivals,
rideshare updates, fraud alerts, or calendar event reminders.
How the Focus Override Functions
When you activate a Focus mode—such as Do Not Disturb, Work, or Sleep—iOS 15 filters incoming alerts based on your allowed contacts and apps list. Despite these restrictions, the operating system includes a dedicated system-level toggle that permits time-sensitive alerts to breach the filter.
By default, iOS 15 enables this override for most Focus profiles. When an incoming push notification contains the time-sensitive metadata:
- The operating system identifies the
interruption-levelpayload before applying standard Focus rules. - The notification engine checks whether the active Focus profile has the "Time-Sensitive Notifications" setting turned on.
- If enabled, the system bypasses the silence filter, delivering the notification to the Lock Screen immediately, playing sound or haptic feedback, and keeping it visible for up to an hour.
User Management and Controls
Although developers request time-sensitive delivery, iOS 15 leaves ultimate control in the hands of the user to prevent apps from abusing the privilege.
Disabling Overrides by Focus Profile
You can prevent all time-sensitive notifications from interrupting a specific Focus mode:
- Open Settings and select Focus.
- Choose the specific Focus mode you want to edit.
- Tap Apps under the "Allowed Notifications" section.
- Toggle off Time-Sensitive Notifications.
Once disabled, even notifications marked as high priority will be delivered quietly to the Notification Center until the Focus session ends.
Disabling Overrides by Individual App
If a specific application abuses the time-sensitive tag for marketing or non-urgent updates, you can revoke its permission:
- Open Settings and select Notifications.
- Scroll to the specific app.
- Toggle off Time-Sensitive Notifications.
Alternatively, when a time-sensitive notification appears on the Lock Screen, iOS 15 often provides an interactive prompt asking if you wish to continue receiving time-sensitive alerts from that specific app or turn them off directly from the notification itself.
