How Shared with You Works in iOS 15 Photos
Apple introduced the "Shared with You" feature in iOS 15 to seamlessly connect your conversations in the Messages app with your personal media collection. This article explains how the Photos app surfaces media received through Messages, how on-device intelligence curates this content, how to save items directly to your camera roll, and how to manage the feature's visibility settings.
Seamless Integration with Messages
When someone sends you pictures or videos via the Messages app, iOS 15 automatically detects them and makes them accessible in the Photos app without requiring you to manually save each file.
The media appears primarily in two places within the Photos app:
- The "For You" Tab: A dedicated "Shared with You" section lists recently received photos along with the name and avatar of the person who sent them.
- The Main Library: Photos are placed chronologically based on when they were taken, rather than when they were received, blending them naturally into your timeline alongside your own shots.
Intelligent Content Filtering
The system does not clutter your library with every single image received. Using on-device machine learning, iOS 15 analyzes incoming media and automatically filters out low-value content such as screenshots, memes, and receipts. Only meaningful content—such as portraits, family gatherings, pets, and travel photos—is elevated to the Photos app.
Interactive Context and Replies
Photos displayed via Shared with You retain a direct link to the conversation in which they were shared. When viewing a shared photo, a small attribution tag with the sender's name appears above the image. Tapping this tag immediately opens the Messages app to the exact point in the chat where the photo was originally sent, allowing you to reply in context without searching through message histories.
Saving to Your Permanent Library
Images in the Shared with You section are tied to the original message thread. If the sender or receiver deletes the message, the photo will disappear from the Photos app unless it is permanently saved.
To keep a photo permanently:
- Tap the photo to open it.
- Tap the Save Shared Photo icon (a downward arrow pointing to a photo tray).
- The photo is now fully stored in your local library and will remain even if the conversation thread is deleted.
Managing and Disabling Shared with You
You have full control over which contacts and media appear in the Photos app:
- Per Conversation: Open a chat in Messages, tap the contact or group name at the top, and toggle off Show in Shared with You to hide media from that specific thread.
- System-wide for Photos: Go to Settings > Photos and turn off Shared with You to prevent any incoming media from appearing in the Photos app while leaving the feature active for other apps like Safari, Music, or Podcasts.
