How Shared with You Works in Apple News on iOS 15
Apple introduced the "Shared with You" feature in iOS 15 to seamlessly integrate the Messages app with system applications like Apple News. When a contact sends you a link to a news story in an iMessage conversation, Apple News automatically organizes and surfaces that content inside the app. This feature eliminates the need to manually bookmark stories or search back through chat histories to find articles your friends and family have recommended.
Automatic Content Aggregation
When someone shares an article via the Messages app, iOS 15 detects the link and indexes it locally on your device. Without any manual saving on your part, the article automatically populates inside the Apple News app under the dedicated "Shared with You" shelf.
Locating the Shared with You Section
You can find these surfaced stories in two primary locations within the Apple News app:
- The Today Feed: Scrolling down through your primary "Today" feed reveals a distinct "Shared with You" horizontal carousel featuring recent articles sent by your contacts.
- The Following Tab: Tapping the "Following" tab at the bottom right of the screen displays a dedicated "Shared with You" menu item, which aggregates all received stories into a comprehensive list.
Sender Attribution and Inline Replies
Each surfaced article card features the name and profile picture of the person who sent the link. Tapping the contact's name above the article headline opens a Messages overlay directly within the Apple News app. This allows you to reply to the sender, react with Tapbacks, or continue the conversation without switching back to the Messages app.
Prioritizing Stories with Pins
You can influence how articles surface by using the Pin feature in Messages. If a contact sends an article you want to read later, you can touch and hold the message bubble in the Messages app and select "Pin." Pinned articles receive priority placement in the Apple News "Shared with You" shelf, keeping them easily accessible.
Managing and Disabling the Feature
Shared with You is enabled by default in iOS 15, but you have granular control over what appears:
- Per-Contact Control: To stop receiving shared articles from a specific person, open their chat thread in Messages, tap their profile at the top, and toggle off "Show in Shared with You."
- App-Level Control: To completely remove the section from Apple News, open the device Settings app, select Messages, tap Shared with You, and toggle off News.
