How Shared with You Organizes Media in iOS 15
Apple's iOS 15 introduced the "Shared with You" feature, a system-level tool designed to automatically index and categorize media sent through the Messages app directly into the corresponding Apple apps. Instead of leaving links, photos, audio tracks, and videos buried inside message threads, iOS 15 sorts this content into dedicated sections across Photos, Safari, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple TV, and Apple News. This guide explains how this automated organization functions across the operating system and how users can interact with their shared media.
Integration Across Dedicated Apps
When a contact sends a compatible link or file in Messages, iOS 15 automatically routes the content to the app best suited to open it:
- Photos App: Shared images and videos appear in a dedicated "Shared with You" row within the For You tab. They are also integrated into your main photo library based on date, prioritized by an on-device algorithm that surfaces meaningful photos (such as portraits or family events) while filtering out memes, receipts, and screenshots.
- Safari: Links sent via Messages appear on the Safari Start Page under the "Shared with You" shelf, showing the webpage preview alongside the sender’s name.
- Apple Music: Songs and albums shared in Messages are collected in the Listen Now tab under a specific "Shared with You" shelf, enabling you to stream them without searching.
- Apple Podcasts: Recommended episodes and shows appear at the top of the Listen Now tab.
- Apple TV App: Shared TV show episodes, movies, and trailers appear directly in the Watch Now row.
- Apple News: Shared news stories populate the Today tab or the Following section.
Sender Attribution and Contextual Replies
Every piece of content organized by Shared with You includes a metadata tag displaying the sender’s name and avatar. Tapping this tag opens a contextual Messages overlay directly within the active application. This allows you to reply to the person who shared the media immediately without switching back to the Messages app.
Content Prioritization with Pinning
To prevent important recommendations from getting lost, iOS 15 includes a "Pin" function inside Messages. By long-pressing any photo, link, or media item in a conversation and selecting Pin, the item receives priority placement at the top of the "Shared with You" section in its respective app, as well as in the details view of the conversation itself.
Management and Customization
Users maintain control over how media is populated across their devices:
- Per-Conversation Controls: You can disable Shared with You for specific contacts by tapping their name at the top of a Messages thread and toggling off Show in Shared with You.
- Global App Controls: In the main iOS Settings > Messages > Shared with You menu, you can selectively toggle the feature on or off for individual apps (such as turning off Photos while keeping Safari active), or disable the feature entirely across the system.
