How Notification Summary Works in iOS 15

Apple introduced the Scheduled Notification Summary in iOS 15 to help users minimize distractions by bundling non-urgent notifications into organized digests delivered at set times throughout the day. The feature uses on-device intelligence combined with user configurations to collect lower-priority alerts silently in the background, rank them by personal relevance, and present them in a clean, glanceable bundle on the Lock Screen, all while allowing critical communications to arrive immediately.

Selecting and Filtering Lower-Priority Apps

The feature relies on manual user preferences to determine which applications qualify for delayed delivery. In iOS Settings under Notifications > Scheduled Summary, users select the specific apps they want to include in their digest. Once selected, incoming alerts from these apps no longer chime, vibrate, or wake the screen in real time.

iOS 15 separates regular notifications from critical ones using app metadata:

  • Passive/Standard Notifications: Routine alerts, such as social media likes, news updates, or promotional emails, are automatically diverted to the summary.
  • Direct Messages and Calls: Person-to-person communications, such as phone calls, SMS, and messaging app chats, bypass the summary by default so vital communication is not delayed.
  • Time-Sensitive Notifications: Developers can mark critical alerts (such as food deliveries, ride-share arrivals, or fraud warnings) with a "Time-Sensitive" flag. These alerts immediately break through the summary lock.

Background Aggregation and On-Device Ranking

Between scheduled delivery intervals, iOS 15 collects diverted notifications silently in the Notification Center. Rather than displaying them in a simple chronological list when the delivery time arrives, the operating system uses on-device machine learning to organize and rank the batch:

  1. Engagement Scoring: The system evaluates how frequently a user interacts with particular apps, placing updates from more frequently used apps near the top of the bundle.
  2. Visual Hierarchy: The top-ranked notifications are displayed with larger app icons and expanded media thumbnails to make quick scanning easier.
  3. App Grouping: Secondary alerts from the same application are nested beneath the primary highlight to avoid clutter.

Scheduled Deliveries and Interaction

Users can establish multiple summary schedules throughout the day, such as a morning summary at 8:00 AM and an evening summary at 6:00 PM.

When a scheduled delivery time arrives, the Notification Summary appears on the Lock Screen and Notification Center as a unified card indicating how many notifications are enclosed. Tapping the card expands the full summary, allowing the user to review, open, or clear the grouped alerts all at once. Any notifications that arrive after a delivery window simply begin accumulating toward the next scheduled summary.
