How Live Text Reads Text from iOS 15 Screenshots

Apple introduced Live Text in iOS 15, allowing users to automatically identify, select, and interact with text contained within images, including screenshots stored in the Photos library. This feature relies on advanced on-device machine learning, deep neural networks, and Apple's Vision framework to process static image files into actionable digital text without sending data to external servers.

When a user captures and saves a screenshot to the Photos library, the operating system initiates an on-device scanning process powered by the Apple Neural Engine. Live Text does not wait for user input to scan the image; instead, it automatically analyzes images in the background or in real time when viewed.

The underlying process involves three key stages:

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Text Detection

The Vision framework runs deep learning algorithms directly on the device's chip to detect bounding boxes around text-like visual patterns within the screenshot. It analyzes pixel contrasts, alignments, and typography to distinguish letters, numbers, and symbols from non-text background elements. This allows the system to recognize typed text, which is typically crisp and high-contrast in digital screenshots, with near-perfect accuracy.

Semantic Parsing and Data Detection

Once the characters are recognized, the system applies natural language processing to understand the context of the words. It categorizes specific formats such as phone numbers, email addresses, street addresses, tracking numbers, and URLs. Through integrated data detectors, iOS converts these parsed text strings into interactive links, allowing users to tap a phone number to make a call or tap an address to open Apple Maps directly from the screenshot.

User Interaction and Indexing

When viewing a screenshot in the Photos app, a dedicated Live Text icon appears in the bottom-right corner if text is detected. Tapping this button highlights all actionable text across the image. Users can interact with the text exactly as they would in a web browser or document—by double-tapping to select, dragging selection handles, copying, translating, or sharing.

Additionally, iOS 15 indexes the recognized text into the device's local database. This integration allows users to type words contained within their screenshots directly into the Photos search bar or system-wide Spotlight Search to retrieve the matching screenshot instantly.
