How Live Text Captures Video Text on iOS 15

Apple’s Live Text feature in iOS 15 uses on-device intelligence to recognize and extract static text directly from the Camera app's live video feed. By leveraging the Apple Neural Engine, the system scans visual frames in real time, isolates textual elements from the background, and allows users to interact with words, phone numbers, and addresses without having to take a permanent photo.

Real-Time Video Stream Analysis

When the Camera app is open, iOS 15 continuously evaluates the live camera preview. The Apple Neural Engine processes the video frames using deep learning algorithms to detect recognizable characters, whether typed, printed, or handwritten. This process occurs entirely on the device, ensuring fast recognition and data privacy.

The Live Text Indicator

When the camera detects static text within the frame, a yellow bounding box momentarily brackets the text to signal recognition. Simultaneously, the Live Text icon—resembling a sheet of paper with bracketed text—appears in the lower-right corner of the camera preview.

Freezing the Frame

Tapping the Live Text icon captures a temporary freeze-frame of the video feed. This isolates the static text from the moving environment, stabilizing it on screen. Once frozen, the background is slightly dimmed to focus attention on the recognized text block.

Direct Text Interaction

With the text isolated from the video stream, users can interact with it just like standard digital text:

  • Selection: Tap and hold or drag selection handles to select specific words or paragraphs.
  • Clipboard Actions: Standard context menus appear, offering Copy, Select All, Look Up, and Translate options.
  • Data Detectors: iOS automatically identifies actionable data. Tapping a phone number initiates a call, an address opens Apple Maps, and a URL opens Safari.

Once the interaction is complete, tapping anywhere outside the active text dismisses the frozen frame and returns the Camera app to the active, live video preview.
