How iOS 15 Protects Your Photo Location Data
Apple’s iOS 15 introduced significant privacy controls designed to give users granular command over the embedded location metadata attached to their photos. This article outlines the built-in tools iOS 15 offers to inspect, modify, and completely remove geographic data from images directly within the native Photos app, eliminating the need for third-party metadata scrubbing tools.
Viewing Embedded Metadata via the Info Button
Prior to iOS 15, viewing detailed Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) data—including exact GPS coordinates—required third-party utilities. iOS 15 integrated an "Info" button (represented by an "i" icon with a star or circle) directly into the Photos app toolbar. Swiping up on an image or tapping this icon instantly displays:
- The exact location where the photo was captured on an interactive map.
- The street address or named landmark associated with the coordinates.
- Technical capture details such as shutter speed, aperture, and camera lens.
Removing or Adjusting Location Data
Once metadata is visible via the Info button, iOS 15 allows users to manipulate the geotag directly:
- Remove Location: Users can tap the Adjust button next to the location details and select No Location. This permanently strips the geographic coordinates from the file stored on the device.
- Spoof or Alter Location: Tapping Adjust also allows users to search for an alternative address or landmark, effectively changing the recorded location to anywhere in the world.
Stripping Location Data Before Sharing
Sharing photos via AirDrop, Messages, Mail, or social media often inadvertently distributes sensitive location data, such as a home address. iOS 15 refines share-sheet privacy controls:
- Select the photo or photos to be shared.
- Tap the Share icon.
- Tap Options at the top of the share sheet.
- Toggle off Location under the "Include" section.
This ensures the recipient receives the media file without the embedded GPS coordinates, while keeping the original metadata intact in your private photo library if desired.
System-Level Camera Permissions
In addition to post-capture editing, iOS 15 maintains preventative privacy settings through the Camera app’s location permissions:
- Users can set Camera location access to Never to ensure no future photos contain location data.
- Users can disable the Precise Location toggle under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Camera, forcing the device to log only approximate regional data rather than exact GPS coordinates.
