How iOS 15 Plays Ocean and Stream White Noise
iOS 15 introduced a native accessibility feature called Background Sounds that plays ambient audio, including ocean waves and flowing streams, directly from the operating system without requiring third-party apps. This article explains how the feature functions technically, how the system generates these soundscapes locally, and how users can enable and configure the playback directly within iOS settings.
How iOS 15 Background Sounds Work
Rather than streaming continuous audio files over an internet connection, iOS 15 utilizes compact, high-quality audio assets stored locally on the device. When a sound like "Ocean" or "Stream" is selected for the first time, iOS downloads a base audio package via the system software.
Once downloaded, the system uses the Core Audio framework to process and loop the sound in real time. For organic sounds like ocean waves and streams, the operating system uses digital signal processing (DSP) to smooth out looping points and prevent repetitive acoustic patterns. This creates an endless, continuous soundscape that consumes minimal battery and requires no ongoing network bandwidth.
Enabling the Sounds in System Settings
To access and configure this feature directly through the operating system:
- Open the Settings app on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 15 or later.
- Navigate to Accessibility.
- Under the Hearing section, select Audio/Visual.
- Tap Background Sounds and toggle the switch to the On position.
- Tap Sound to choose between the available options: Balanced Noise, Bright Noise, Dark Noise, Ocean, Rain, or Stream.
From this menu, users can also adjust the master volume of the background audio independently of the general system volume.
Layering and Media Playback
A key technical advantage of integrating this capability into the operating system is system-level audio mixing. Inside the Background Sounds menu, the Play Audio When Media is Playing option allows the stream or ocean noise to blend continuously behind music, podcasts, or video playback. Users can set a dedicated slider to determine how much the background sound attenuates when primary media is active, ensuring that the natural audio remains present without overpowering foreground content.
Quick Access via Control Center
For faster access without navigating the Settings app, the feature integrates into the iOS Control Center. By adding the Hearing tile via Settings > Control Center, users can tap the ear icon in the Control Center at any time to toggle the ocean or stream audio on and off, change the track, and adjust the volume level on the fly.
