How iOS 15 Live Text Extracts Links from Documents

Apple’s Live Text feature in iOS 15 allows users to interact with text inside photos and camera feeds as if it were digital text. By leveraging on-device machine learning, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and Apple’s Data Detectors framework, the system can instantly identify printed web addresses on physical paper, translate them into machine-readable strings, and convert them into clickable hyperlinks without sending any data to external cloud servers.

1. Image Acquisition and Pre-Processing

When an iPhone running iOS 15 points its camera at a physical document or opens an existing photo, the operating system analyzes the visual input frame by frame. The Apple Neural Engine (ANE) quickly identifies document boundaries, adjusts for perspective distortions, optimizes contrast, and isolates regions containing potential text from background noise and graphics.

2. Character Recognition via the Vision Framework

Once text regions are segmented, iOS uses deep learning models built into the Vision framework to perform Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Convolutional neural networks read the shapes of individual glyphs and letters, accounting for varying fonts, lighting conditions, and angles. The visual shapes are then transcribed into standard Unicode text characters.

3. Syntax Parsing with Data Detectors

Recognizing the characters alone does not make a link interactive. To understand what the text represents, iOS passes the transcribed Unicode string through Apple's native Data Detectors engine. This pattern-matching and natural language processing layer scans for standard Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) syntax, including:

  • Protocol prefixes such as http:// or https://
  • Subdomains like www.
  • Top-Level Domains (TLDs) such as .com, .org, .net, or regional equivalents
  • Standard URL path and parameter structures

When a sequence of characters matches the syntactic pattern of a valid web address, the Data Detectors tag the specific string as an actionable URL.

4. Interactive UI Overlay

After classifying the text as a web link, iOS 15 maps the coordinates of the detected characters back to their original pixel locations in the image. The operating system overlays an invisible, interactive hit-target directly over the printed URL.

When a user taps the Live Text indicator or touches the recognized web address directly, iOS presents standard context options, such as opening the link in Safari, previewing the webpage via Quick Look, adding it to the Reading List, or copying the URL to the clipboard. All of these steps occur locally in real time on the device's hardware.
