How iOS 15 Live Text Extracts Emails to Mail
Apple’s Live Text feature in iOS 15 bridges physical documents and digital actions by leveraging on-device machine learning and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to detect printed text. When you scan a document containing an email address, the system identifies the characters, recognizes the string as an email format via Apple's Data Detectors framework, and generates an interactive trigger that opens a compose window directly in the Mail app.
On-Device Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
Live Text utilizes the Apple Neural Engine alongside the Vision framework to process visual data locally on the device. When the Camera app frames a document, or when viewing an image in Photos or Files, the system scans the frame using deep learning models trained to detect text orientation, fonts, and glyphs. Because all computation occurs on-device, processing latency is minimal, and user data remains private.
Pattern Recognition with Data Detectors
Once the Vision framework extracts the raw alphanumeric characters
from the scan, iOS passes the string through Apple's Data Detectors
engine. Data Detectors analyzes the text for specific syntax patterns
matching uniform standards, such as standard RFC 5322 email formatting
(name@example.com). When a match occurs, the operating
system classifies the text string as an actionable entity rather than
plain text.
Interactive UI Layering
After classifying the text as an email address, iOS 15 overlays a metadata boundary directly over the physical words displayed on your screen. The Live Text indicator appears in the corner of the viewfinder or image interface, signaling that actionable content has been indexed. The system highlights the email address, turning printed ink into an active hyperlink.
Triggering the Mail App
When you tap on the recognized email address, iOS dispatches an
internal mailto: action. This system-level call takes the
exact extracted string and routes it to your configured default email
client—typically Apple Mail. The trigger automatically creates a new
message draft and populates the "To:" field with the scanned address,
allowing you to compose and send your message without manually
transcribing or copying text.
