How iOS 15 Live Text Detects Links and Opens Safari

Apple’s Live Text feature in iOS 15 bridges the physical and digital worlds by using on-device machine learning to recognize printed text, such as website URLs, through the Camera or Photos app. By combining advanced optical character recognition (OCR) with Apple's system-level Data Detectors, your iPhone can instantly parse text found on paper, signs, or packaging, convert it into an interactive hyperlink, and open the destination directly in Safari.

1. Visual Capture and Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

When you point your camera at a physical object or view an image in the Photos app, iOS 15 uses the Apple Neural Engine to analyze the visual feed in real time. The device breaks down the visual elements to differentiate between background imagery and alphanumeric characters. Using deep learning models trained on vast typography datasets, the on-device vision framework recognizes the exact characters, spacing, and layout of the printed text without requiring an internet connection.

2. Semantic Analysis via Data Detectors

Once raw text is identified, iOS passes the string through an intelligent framework known as Data Detectors. This engine is programmed to identify specific syntactic patterns, such as phone numbers, dates, physical addresses, and URLs.

For web links, Data Detectors scan for standard web indicators:

  • URI schemes such as http:// or https://
  • Common domain prefixes like www.
  • Standard Top-Level Domains (TLDs) such as .com, .org, or country-code extensions

Even if the printed URL omits https://, the parser recognizes the structural syntax (e.g., example.com/page) as an internet address.

3. User Interface Transformation

When a string matches URL criteria, iOS 15 converts that portion of the image into an interactive element. In the Camera app, a yellow bounding box typically appears around the text, followed by the Live Text icon appearing in the lower-right corner. Tapping this icon isolates the text, highlights the recognized URL, and renders it as an actionable blue hyperlink directly on top of the image interface.

4. Executing the Safari Launch

When you tap the detected link, iOS invokes its native URL handling service. The operating system verifies the string format, automatically prepends the standard https:// protocol if it was omitted on the printed material, and passes the target URL to Safari. Safari then immediately launches in the foreground and begins resolving the web address, eliminating the need to manually transcribe URLs from physical objects into the browser.
